3rd Reflection

Excited by the first and second reflection, I now write for the third time to fill this reflection. This time I want to say about the sense of fun in the management of this eportfolio. Easy and fun. I just have to think of sentences and continue typing. Very excited about this era of modernity.

Eportfolio taught me to be more proficient in writing. Now I would like to write and keep writing.Hopefully, my interests are not simply buried. Although the eportfolio was introduced in the syllabus of technical communication 2, but I do not feel the need to stop soon eportfolio management. Hopefully my interests in enhancing writing in English is increasing. Hopefully I will become proficient in the use of English in daily life. See you again

Second Reflection

RECOMMENDATION REPORT

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background

Almost 50-60% of UTeM student are using motorcycle as their transportation. Motorcycle is a kind of vehicle that requires more safety precautions than car. This is because a motorcyclist is has nothing to absorb the impact when something crash into the motorcycle and the motorcyclist himself needs to wear some protective gadget such as a helmet to protect their head from any impact when it crash into something. Although there are a lot of brands for helmet in the market, our study found that two brands of helmet would suit certain criteria for students’ use. This recommendation report aims to suggest for the best type of helmet for UTeM students’ use; MS88 or Index.

1.2 Objectives

There are three objectives for us to complete this thesis. First objective is to find the specifications of the MS88 and INDEX aftermarket helmet regarding the safety level and features, the price and the design. Second objective is to state the advantages and disadvantages for both of the helmets. The last objective is to recommend which brand of helmet is better between the MS88 and the INDEX helmet for UTeM motorcyclists.

1.3 Scope

The Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan(JPJ) department would like to collaborate with UTeM’s student affairs and Alumni Department(HEPA), to propose for the best helmet for UTeM students’ use either MS 88 or INDEX and it is our responsibility as committee of Road Safety Club to suggest which brand is the best helmet for student which will be discussed later.

1.4 Organisation

The first chapter is the introduction will include the background of the research. The second chapter will describe the method and procedure. In the third chapter, result and discussion will be presented. While in the final chapter, the final recommendation and conclusion about the whole research will be included.

CHAPTER 2

METHODS, MATERIALS AND PROCEDURES

2.1 Methods

2.1.1 Distributing questionnaires

This recommendation report has focused primarily on recommending the best helmet for UTeM students’ use; either the brand of MS 88 or Index. The suitability of which brand that most of students prefer is based on several criteria; for example a level comfort, affordability, reasonable price, safety features and et cetera. A survey on which brand that student would prefer most by distributing questionnaires was also carried out in order to assess the students’ satisfaction about these brands.

The questionnaires were designed for the purpose of soliciting the opinions of students regarding the following:

· Affordability

· Reasonable price

· Light weight

· Easy to put on

· Safety features

· The brand that student would prefer most

A total of 20 students were involved in answering the questionnaires. They were actually picked randomly and all of them were motorcycle riders.

Some difficulties which we encountered during the survey, includes the difficulty to approach targeted respondents and respondents who were not willing to answer the questionnaires given.

2.1.2 Surf the internet

In order to find the appropriate source of information of both brands which are MS 88 and Index, internet has been used. The details on several helmet’s criteria were obtain through the World Wide Web.

2.2 Procedure

On the whole, the steps that were taken in carrying out the recommendation report included the process of designing the survey form to collect data and evaluating the data. First and foremost, data was collected to find out the factors that influence the students’ satisfaction on both brands of helmet. Next, the various factors were observed and evaluated. The data was then tabulated and analysed. Finally, comparisons on several criteria on both brands were made.

3.1.2 Index Helmet

Figure 1 Index helmet

The Index Open Face motorcycle helmet is the good helmet for the rider who wants a good amount of protection, but does not want to be enclosed in a full face helmet. Full face helmets can be stuffy and if you are not used to wearing a full face helmet and still want most of your head protected, then open face helmets is the way to go. This helmet has a few extras on it that you will not see on the standard open face or three quarter helmets.

The Index Open Face motorcycle helmet has a full face shield attached to it. This shield is not stationary. You can flip the shield up and down which is great compared to the five snap shields that do not move at all. The inner padding is replaceable. The comfort padding is the soft foam-and-cloth layer that sits next to your head. It helps keep you comfortable and the helmet fitting snugly. In some helmets, this padding can even be taken out for cleaning. Another great feature of the Index Open Face motorcycle helmet is there is a retractable smoked shield that is built into the inside of the helmet. There is a lever attached at the top of the helmet that you easily slide forward or backward to retract the shield. You have the clear outer shield for your main facial protection, and then if it's sunny outside, with just a slide of the lever you have a half shield that comes down to give your eyes protection from the sun.

3.1.3 MS 88 Helmet

Figure 2 MS 88 helmet with visor (left) and without visor (right)

The MS 88 motorcycle helmet is also good helmet for the rider who wants a good amount of protection, but does not want to be enclosed in a full face helmet. The shell can protects head dispersing energy and the liner absorbing impact even a little thin.

The MS 88 motorcycle helmet has 3 snaps on the front top of the helmet. These are so the rider can either attach a visor or a full face shield to it. There are several different visors that you can choose from to attach to the helmet to help keep the sun out of your eyes or just to make your helmet look better. The choices are a bubble visor in smoke, black, or chrome. There are also half bubble visors and mini scoop visors to choose from that you can attach to this helmet. There are also different kinds of shields to choose from for the MS 88 motorcycle helmet. The MS 88 meets or exceeds MS 1: 1996 motorcycle helmet safety standards.

Figure 3 Basic construction of a helmet

3.2 Physical characteristics

3.2.1 Basic component

Four basic component works together to provide protection in the motorcycle helmet.

3.2.1.1 Outer shell

Usually made from some family of fiber reinforced composites or thermoplastic like polycarbonate. This is tough stuff. Yet it’s designed and intended to compress when its hint anything hard. The action disperses from the impact to lessen the force before it reaches your head, but it’s doesn’t act alone to protect.

3.2.1.2 Impact absorbing liner

Usually made of expanded polystyrene (commonly thought of as Styrofoam). This dense layer cushions and absorbs the shock as the helmet stops and your head wants to keep on moving.

Both the shell and the liner compress if hit hard, spreading the forces of impact throughout the helmet material. The more impact energy deflected or absorbed, the less there is of it to reach your head and do damage. Some helmet shells delaminate on impact. Others may crack and break if forced to take a severe hit. This is one way a helmet acts to absorb shock.

It is doing its intended job. Impact damage from a crash to the non resilient liner may be invisible to the eyes. It may look great, but it probably has little protective value left and should be replaced.

3.2.1.3 Comfort padding

Comfort padding is the soft foam and cloth layer that sits next to your head. It helps keep you comfortable and the helmet fitting snugly. In some helmet, this padding can even be taken out for cleaning.

3.2.1.4 Retention system

Retention system or chin strap is very important. It is the one piece that keeps the helmet on your head in a crash. A strap is connected to each side of the shell. Every time the rider put the helmet on, fasten the strap securely. It only takes of couple of seconds. To ride helmet secured would be as questionable as driving without seatbelt fastened.

3.3 Presenting results

Question 1: Are you familiar with these 2 brands of helmet; MS 88 and Index?

Figure 4: Student’s familiarity of both brands of helmet.

According to the Figure 4, we can state from our research that 15 of 20 students knew about both helmets MS 88 and Index. From that, only 5 students did not know about them.

Figure 14: Which helmet you would suggest for UTeM students

There are 12 students who suggested for UTeM students to use Index helmet while another 8 students gave the suggestion to use the MS 88’s helmet.

3.4 Discussion

After the study was conducted on 20 students, we conclude that the best type of helmet for UTeM students’ use is Index. This conclusion is based on specifications that have been raised and answers given by students themselves. Many comparisons have been made against the two types of helmets in terms of price, quality, suitability and other factors.

CHAPTER 4

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

From the research we have been taken out using the survey and finding information over the internet, the team finally came out with a conclusion. The conclusion is that the Index helmet is better for the student comparing the MS88 helmet. The survey that have been taken out also shown that the student also preferring the Index helmet which are 18 over 20 student will buy the helmet even it is relatively more expensive compared to the MS88 helmet. This shown that most of the students are trusted the Index helmet compared to the MS88.We would like to recommend the Index helmet for our department of Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan Malaysia (JPJ) as the helmet to give to the Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) student during our road safety campaign. This particular helmet has meet most of our requirement of specifications. This helmet is safer than the MS88 helmet, last longer then MS88 helmet and far more comfortable for the long and short distance riding. Even the helmet is more expensive then the MS88 helmet, but, due to the safety and comfort reasons, it is far more better then the MS88 helmet. With the build-in visor, thicker inner sponge and thicker shell, the helmet is trusted by most of the student based on the survey we had taken out. With the safety approval from SIRIM Malaysia Bhd (SIRIM), this helmet is the best for the student. If this helmet recommendation meets your approval, I will proceed to the preliminary meeting with the main vendor for Index helmet.
